STING AND PETER GABRIEL'S; BIOGRAPHY

Sting and Peter Gabriel are two of the most respected personalities in the music industry. Both have been successful as solo artists for decades, but they first made their names as frontmen for their respective groups - Sting with The Police, and Gabriel with Genesis.

MORE ABOUT STING AND PETER GABRIEL

Born in the North East of England in 1951, and christened Gordon Matthew Sumner, Sting first became set on a career in music after seeing the charismatic Jimi Hendrix on British TV in the mid-1960s. However, it was in jazz groups rather than rock bands that Sting began his career as a musician.

It wasn't until the punk era that Sting's career could be deemed a success though, when The Police really begin to make an impact. While every new band in the late 1970s seemed to be called punk or new wave, The Police had a noticeably unique sound that fused rock and pop with reggae.

In the early 1980s The Police became the biggest band in the world, and their hits included Every Breath You Take and Don't Stand So Close to Me. But at the height of their fame The Police split up and Sting then embarked on a successful solo career, with hits including Russians and Fields of Gold. In his career so far, Sting has sold over a hundred million records.

Born in Surrey in 1950, Peter Gabriel first made his name as the eccentric singer with prog rock giants Genesis in the 1970s. Since the start of his solo career, Gabriel has gained a reputation as one of the most innovative of artists. While his 1986 album So featured the hits Sledgehammer and Don't Give Up (with Kate Bush), and was one of the most acclaimed albums of the 1980s.

Gabriel has also done much to further the cause of world music, and, together with Sting, he has a strong humanitarian streak. This was underlined by Gabriel's moving song Biko, which was a tribute to the great anti-apartheid activist Stephen Biko.
